While liquid oils are used in sealed circulating loops, nearly 90% of all moving machine bearings rely on lubricating grease. Grease provides a semi-solid barrier, locking base oil in place, sealing out dust, and preventing metal-to-metal contact under heavy shock loads.
1. Anatomy of a Premium Lubricating Grease
To select the right grease, it is helpful to understand its three primary components:
- Base Oil (70% - 95%): The liquid lubricant that actually performs the separation of metal components inside bearings.
- Thickener / Soap (3% - 30%): Acts like a chemical sponge, holding the base oil in place. Thickeners include Lithium, Calcium, Lithium Complex, and Calcium Sulphonate.
- Additives (1% - 10%): Enhances grease performance, providing Extreme Pressure (EP) properties, anti-wear boundaries, and rust protection.
2. Selecting the Soap Type based on Operating Environment
- Lithium Soap Grease (NLGI 3): The standard multi-purpose industrial grease. Offers high mechanical stability, good shear resistance, and a dropping point of around 190°C. Ideal for general chassis pins, electric motors, and general bearings.
- Calcium Base Grease: Extremely water-resistant. Best suited for slow-speed agricultural implements, water pump shafts, and marine components operating in wet environments below 60°C.
- Lithium Complex Grease: High-temperature grease with a dropping point exceeding 260°C. Engineered for heavy automotive wheel hubs operating under severe braking heat, and steel mill rolling bearings.
