What 15W-40 actually means

The two numbers describe how the oil flows. "15W" is its winter rating, which tells you how easily it moves when the engine starts cold. "40" is how thick it stays at normal running temperature. This balance suits most Indian operating conditions, which is why 15W-40 is so common in diesel trucks, buses and tippers.

Start with your OEM manual

The grade is only half the story. Every engine maker also names a performance specification level, usually an API service category or the OEM's own standard. Always match both the grade and the spec your manual calls for. Using a lower spec to save a little per litre can cost far more in wear and downtime.

Think about how your trucks really run

A long-haul highway fleet, a city delivery fleet and a mining tipper fleet put very different stress on oil. Heavy loads, frequent stop-start driving, dusty sites and long idling all affect how quickly oil works its way through its life. Share your duty cycle with your supplier so they can recommend the right product and drain practice.

Don't ignore drain intervals

Follow the drain interval in your OEM manual as a baseline, then adjust it with your supplier based on your operating conditions. Stretching intervals without checking is one of the most common causes of avoidable engine wear.

Consistency matters more than you think

If one batch of oil differs from the next, your maintenance planning stops being reliable. Choose a manufacturer that makes the oil itself and runs certified quality systems, so every drum behaves the same way.

Pack sizes that fit your depot

Small packs suit top-ups on the road, while larger packs suit a workshop. The right mix reduces waste and keeps stock simple.
